Description

A rare and old Piedmontese grape, grown on the hills of Verduno, where it's ancient roots originated. Popular tradition has it that the Pelaverga vine was introduced in the town of Verduno in the XVII century, by the Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè, who brought some vines that had grown in the zone of Saluzzo. These vines produced a grape that was said to be aphrodisiac, as Sebastiano Valfrè had always been considered a young adventurous knight, both lively and light-hearted, a little saint and a little devil, in the court of King Barolo.

The varietal was nearly extinct until the 1970’s, when the intuition of some great viticulturists from Verduno, including Mr. Giuseppe Priola, one of the owners of Bel Colle, saved Peleverga from extinction and was replanted. Today, the growth of Peleverga has never slowed, achieving in 1995 the sought after D.O.C. recognition.

The wine is a light ruby red color with a hint of pink, turning slightly orange with age. A spicy and flirty nose with elements of cherry blossom and white pepper. On the palate, a light to medium bodied fresh wine with a silky texture and medium acid has your mouth watering for cured meats and plates of antipasta.
