La Faya is a local dialect word for the
family's name
of Sandro
Fay, and
comes from a single south-facing vineyard at the altitude of 550m, in the
village of Teglio
in Valtellina.
This vineyard has a forest at the bottom that casts some
shade on the lower vines, so Sandro
Fay decided to plant Merlot in this section. At the highest, rockiest elevation
of the vineyard, he planted a few terraces of Syrah. These grapes gave birth to
this elegant blend of 60% Nebbiolo Chiavennasca,
30% Merlot, and 10% Syrah, where each component is fermented separately and
blended later. Aged for at least 12 months in tonneaux
before racking and bottling, this intriguing full body wine is held in the
cellar for about 18 to 24 months before release. In the glass, it has an
intense ruby color with orange shades. Although still showing a very good
structure and essentially cool-climate characters, it is certainly the most
voluptuous of the wines in the Fay's range. On the nose, it has intense aromas
of camphor, white pepper, darker spices, black olives, vanilla, and a very
small touch of sweetness. The palate is very long and lush, with flavors of
black fruits, especially fresh picked blackberries, strawberry, raspberry,
cherry. Nice fresh acidity balances the more lush fruit, and firm but round
tannins appear on the end palate. Pair it with, hearty pasta, fatty fish and lamb.
