Vermentino is a light-skinned wine grape variety, primarily found in Italian wine. It is widely planted in Sardinia, in Liguria primarily under the name Pigato, to some extent in Corsica, in Piemonte under the name Favorita, and in increasing amounts in Languedoc-Roussillon. The leaves are dark green and pentagonal. The grapes are amber-yellow and hang in pyramidal bunches. The vines are often grown on slopes facing the sea where they can benefit from the additional reflected light. The Vitis International Variety Catalogue now gives Italy as its origin.

Vermentino Italian White Wine

In many circumstances, the best agricultural growing conditions include mineral-rich, moist soil. If this were true for grapes, wineries in the northern part of Sardegna would not exist today. The Sardegnian viticulture that yields fine Italian white wine relies on its calcareous soil and granite land (often accompanied by a sandy top soil) to produce its grapes. This extremely poor soil provides excellent drainage and tames even the most aggressive vines.

These two soil characteristics are what make Vermentino di Sardegna thrive. Vermentino is a grape that has a tendency to be on the larger side and fill up with water. Because of this, it needs a climate that is hot and dry, along with good drainage and ventilation.

Vermentino di Gallura

Vermentino di Gallura is the island of Sardinia’s first and only DOCG. The grapes are cultivated in the northeastern region of Gallura where the terrain has a huge bearing on the characteristics of this type of Italian white wine. The wine must be comprised of at least 95% Vermentino in order to be considered a true Vermentino di Gallura.

Today Vermentino di Gallura is one of the most successful Italian white wines in the region. Both the nose and palate feature a floral bouquet with hints of mineral.
