Verdicchio
di Matelica maybe the lesser known of the two Verdicchio DOCGs of Italy's
Marche region however it is fast becoming the most sought after by wine
enthusiasts all over the world because of two key factors: First
the Verdicchios produced in Matelica have much better ageing potential than
their Jesi counterparts and can age well up to fifteen years in the bottle. Second
Verdicchio di Matelica wines are of much higher quality, complexity and have superior
balance and structure making them more suitable for a variety of foods.
The
vineyards of Matelica are landlocked at about 1300 feet of altitude in a valley
that runs from east to west on the slopes of the Apennine Mountains, in the
Provinces of Ancona and Macerata, the soils are rich with mineral calcareous
clay combined with the moderate continental weather which helps make it an
ideal zone for the cultivation of vines.
Wines
made from Verdicchio grown in the Matelica DOC generally appear a straw yellow
with golden highlights color in the glass.
The
nose features floral aromas, hints of vanilla and almonds.
The
palate is usually complex with tropical fruit flavors, citrus peel and hints of
hazelnut balanced by flinty minerality, brisk acidity and a lingering finish.
