Chiusa is made from Antonelli's paramount Sagrantino di Montefalco, from the best selection of massale grafts on rootstock. This wine is stored in lightly toasted barrels for 6 months then in oak barrels for 15 months followed by clarification in cement vats for 3 months, and lastly, aged in the bottle for two years. This is a very tannic and rustic wine, that will pair ideally with red meats and heartier dishes. Deep ruby explosive aromas of sweet ripe red cherry, chocolate-covered plum, violet, and cappuccino. it starts out rich and suave, then turns somewhat more austere, offering lovely purity to its red fruit and sweet baking spice flavors. Displays lovely balance for a Sagrantino with the Antonelli-signature silky tannins and great length. Very well done. One of the best wines I have tasted this year! Super complex in the best way. I got tobacco, leather and plum on the nose behind a huge hit of candied burnt orange zest (like a good GrandMarnier). On the palate the orange zest was less prominent but integrated nicely with some cassis, lots of ripe red fruit as well as some smoke!
