Sangiovese is Italys most widely planted grape.  With its numerous clones, Sangiovese accounts for about 10% of Italys grape production, and it is an officially recommended variety in 53 provinces.  Although it is a very adaptable grape, the vine produces the best fruit when it is grown in limestone rich soil, as is the case in central Italy.

Sangiovese comes in many forms, such as in a blend (for example, Chianti Classico or Super Tuscans), by itself, or as a clone (as in Brunello di Montalcino).  Because it comes in many forms, the quality of the Sangiovese is dependent on many factors.  However, the typical Sangiovese is slightly acidic with bright cherry and red fruit aromas.  At its best, Sangiovese is a powerful and elegant wine that ages beautifully.
