Canevel Spumante started in 1979, the passion partnership between Mario Caramel, producer of vinegar and a wine merchant from Oderzo, and winemaking expert Roberto De Lucchi. They founded the company in a small workshop beneath the church of Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene and set out to make the best sparkling expression of the Glera grape in the region. "Canavel" in local dialect translates to "small cellar", and it was this feeling of a tiny place to safeguard secrets and traditions that the founders wished to embody. They preferred to hand pick the grapes directly for their production, something that was left up to the cooperatives back 30 years ago when Prosecco was nothing more than a simple sparkling wine. Canevel was there at the beginning of the DOCG process in Valdobbiadene, and today is one of the premier, small producers of Valdobbiadene Spumante Brut DOCG, Extra Dry DOCG, Cartizze DOCG and Spumante Dosaggio Zero DOCG.
