Maixei wines combine the essence of dry stone walling, a traditional technique used in Liguria, with a modern flavor, imbued with memories of the past. The terroir and mild climate of Liguria provide the ideal conditions for the production of varietals such as Pigato, Vermentino and Rossese. The areas under cultivation belonging to members of the Maixei cooperative are situated along the Nervia and Crosia valleys in the province of Imperia in the Italian Riviera.

The wineries that form part of the cooperative - the ‘Cooperativa Riviera dei Fiori’ – are located in areas of the municipalities of Apricale, Baiardo, Camporosso, Castelvittorio, Dolceacqua, Isolabona, Perinaldo, Pigna, Rocchetta Nervina, S.Biagio della Cima, Soldano and several zones in the municipalities of Vallecrosia, Ventimiglia and Vallebona. The wineries of Rossese di Dolceacqua joined to form a cooperative in 1978.

The vineyards are situated in foothills ranging from 300 to 600 m above sea level on slopes maintained by dry stone walling, known as “maixei” in local dialect. Each vineyard has slightly different features from neighboring vineyards depending on a variety of factors such as the nature of the terrain or exposure. The vines are mainly cultivated using the “alberello” system to ensure that the bunches of grapes are shaded and protected from the sun’s rays during the hottest parts of the day.
