This fantastic Barbera from Monforte (Piemonte) is named after Vittoria, the daughter of
Gianfranco Alessandria. The
old vines were planted in 1935, and Gianfranco produces only
5,500 bottles a year.
Aged for 18 months in 45% new French oak, and 8 months in the bottle before
release, the Vittoria is
an intense ruby-purple color tending to garnet with aging. The wine has a
wonderful balance of soft tannins and bright acidity. It has deep fruity flavor
with hints of juicy plums and cherries are well interspersed with notes of
tobacco, vanilla and other spices. This wine has a perfect harmony with the majority of
Italian cuisine:
it is
wonderful paired
with
pasta, ravioli and meat dishes.
