In the 13th Century
the
warring
provinces of Florence and Siena found
an
original way to solve their ongoing border disputes:
they agreed on a race, and when the first Rooster crowed at dawn,
each city would send out its fastest rider bound for the rival city. Where the
two riders met,
they would mark
the new provincial boundary. However, the cunning Florentines gained a head
start by starving their black Rooster
to make him sing earlier, weighting the outcome in favor for Florence. This
is the legend behind the DOCGs Black Rooster logo.
The modern-day Chianti Classico
viticultural
area covers almost all land between Sienna and Florence, buffered at each end
by the Colli
Fiorentini
and Colli
Senesi
production zones. Aged in French barrels for twelve months and then in bottle
for four months, this wine is an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it has
aromas of berries, spices, and vanilla.
Very balanced with a great finish, it matches
wonderfully with grilled red meats, beef, sheep, and fowl.
